The fact that it's Ramadan AGAIN during Jacob's birthday kept the celebration low-key. He really wanted to have a pool party, and since the pool is free for us to use, we were good with that. But it was turning out to be too much of a hassle between scheduling and the restrictions on public partying/eating/drinking during daylight hours (while the Muslims are fasting). Not that we were going to having a huge blow-out anyway, but we weren't even sure about bringing a cake to the pool with a few friends. It's just not very respectful, and we ARE guests in their country...
So, we postponed having a party with his friends until the first weekend of October, when most people will be back from the week-long holiday at the end of the Holy Month. Jake showed a lot of maturity in accepting the delay - we're proud of him - we always are.
The four of us ended up having Jake's favorite dinner (crepes and beef bacon), presents, and cake. Nothing earth shattering....an intimate little celebration. Just perfect.
Ramadan moves up 11 calendar days every year, as it's based on a lunar calendar. Unfortunately, his birthday will still hit during Ramadan next year, but right toward the end. However, when he turns 10, we should be able to really party!
